Well, what a fantastic day it was! It was the sixth Soccer Aid charity match this year, held at Manchester United’s home ground of Old Trafford in aid of UNICEF.
While the English team went on to win with three smashing goals, The Rest of The World didn’t do too bad either – scoring a whopping two goals!
With players such as Ronaldinho, Cafu, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Robbie Williams, Olly Murs and Marvin Humes – it was set to be an extremely entertaining match and the players & crowd certainly did not disappoint! With a two minute tackle on Irish pop sensation, Nicky Byrne by Phil Neville, it was set in stone that the game was to be taken seriously with no messing around!
Although the first half of the game was awesome, the second half kicked off the intenseness of it! With Mark Wright (England) scoring with a freekick from 35 yards – England were off to a flying start, which was short lived as Ben Shepherd was shortly shown a red card and was sent off!
Scoring for the Rest of the World, Berbatov went on to score two goals – helping his team draw level with England. However, Jermaine Defoe (England) went on to score in the 65th minute and went on to score again in the 75th minute which turned out to be the winning goal! Talk about fantastic?!
The game also saw the first public appearance at Old Trafford for the new manager of Manchester United, José Mourinho!
Lets not forget about the reason for Soccer Aid though, raising money for UNICEF to help those less fortunate. An incredible amount of £5,391,398 was raised from this years Soccer Aid.
